MAYNARD — Chief Angela Lawless and the Maynard Fire Department are pleased to share this week’s station feature: gyms.
Maynard Fire station now has two designated physical fitness areas for members to use.
The two areas are equipped with various equipment including weights, cardio machines, squat racks, medicine balls, stationary bikes and more. The different equipment encourages members to work out while having different modalities available for everyone’s comfort level.
One of the gyms is on the first floor near the apparatus entrance. This space is more diverse as it can be used for cross-fit style work outs. This space allows members to practice training and work out while wearing their structural gear.
Firefighters have the unique job of responding to emergencies in the blink of an eye, and most cardiovascular events occur when an individual’s resting heart rate quickly jumps.
It is imperative that firefighters remain physically fit as the job requires an extensive amount of physical labor. By working out while on duty, firefighters are training their hearts, making them stronger and helping them respond to calls in a faster and safer way.
“It is important for our members to be active and healthy to serve the Maynard community,” said Chief Lawless. “The safety of our members is of utmost importance and these spaces allow us to keep ourselves heathy and keep our hearts strong. By having a robust firefighter specific health and wellness program and space, we are finding ways to improve every day. Working out is a great way to stay active and fit, while keeping our muscles strong, including our hearts.”
