MAYNARD– Chief Anthony Stowers wishes to remind residents that Special Town Meeting is tomorrow, and members will be asked whether or not to allocate funding for a new fire station.
Residents will vote on whether to approve a debt exclusion allocating $16 million to build a new fire station. Special Town Meeting takes place on Saturday, Oct. 3 at the Mill and Main parking lot at 5 Mill and Main at 1 p.m. To view the Special Town Meeting Warrant, click here.
If approved, the new fire station would replace the current facility on Summer Street, which was built in 1954 and occupied in 1955.
The current facility has multiple deficiencies, including roof leaks, plumbing failures, inadequate heating, ventilation, locker room facilities, and an apparatus floor that is too small and does not allow for all fire department vehicles to fit inside.
The new station would resolve these concerns and would also serve as a training facility. Additionally, the new facility would separate the equipment and living areas for firefighters while they are at the station, and would provide adequate locker room facilities.
If voters approve the project this weekend and at the ballot vote in early 2021, the project would go out to bid this spring and is expected to take between 12 and 18 months to build.
Residents are also reminded that this will be a “Drive-in Movie Style” meeting, similar to the Annual Town Meeting held in June. This is being done in an effort to protect the health and safety of all who will be in attendance.
Face coverings will be required during registration at Special Town Meeting for everyone, exempting those who are two years old or younger, have certain medical conditions or cannot remove a face covering without assistance.
