MAYNARD — Chief Angela Lawless and the Maynard Fire Department are pleased to share this week’s station feature: community remembrance space.
Maynard Fire has an outdoor community space and flagpole located on the street facing side of the station.
This space is equipped with benches, a flagpole, and painted rocks, created by Maynard Public Schools students to honor 9/11. The flagpole is also lit up at night.
The area is used as a symbol for firefighters’ devotion to community and country. Maynard Fire used the space to show their respect and provide a space for the community to sit and reflect.
While this area honors veterans and those who serve the country, including public safety officials, it is also a reminder of those who lost their lives while serving.
Maynard Fire is currently collaborating with the Maynard Historical Committee to display an educational plaque in this space to share the history of the land on which the station was built.
Maynard Fire currently has four members who are veterans: firefighter Brian Kramer, who served in the Navy, firefighters Mark Latta and Josh Schrader, who served in the Marines, and firefighter Ed Wasiuk who served in the Army.
Additionally, Maynard Fire is working with a community member with his Eagle Scout project to design and build a container where the community can deposit flags that may have been damaged and properly discarded per protocol.
“This space allows not only our department but our community to honor and remember those who dedicate their lives to their communities and country,” said Chief Lawless.
“We have used this space in the past for 9/11 memorial ceremonies and veterans day ceremonies. Residents can pay their respects and take in the history of our department.”
